The temples of Siem Reap

This Chinese new year we were lucky enough to spend a few days in Siem Reap, Cambodia. So many people had told us how spectacular the temples around Siem Reap were, we just had to go and visit.

The temples certainly don’t disppoint. They are spectacular. Above and below is one of the biggest and most recent one, Angkor Wat.

We also visited several other temples including Angkor Thom (an expansive ancient walled city enclosing two fabulous royal terraces and the sacred Bayon temple with its forest of carved faces), Ta Prohm (atmospheric temple held in the clutch of giant trees) and Banteay Srei (rosy-red sandstone temple with delightful carvings).

Yes in even in those days the women had manicures…

One of the temples was covered by trees, which made it even more attractive.

We had a guide with us the whole day, who told us that they can’t quite figure out how it is possible that they would incorporate a picture of a dinossaur in the artworks. No dinossaurs skeletons have ever been found in Cambodia….

We learned a lot about Cambodia, its history and its people and we had an absolutely delightful stay. I also have some pictures from the village that was right next door to our wonderful hotel. If you want to see larger versions of the images you can check them out at flickr.
